Minor rant

People of the world. Please note: there are hardly any instances where using the words “myself” or “yourself” is correct.

“It was really bad for myself” – WRONG
“I thought I would ask how it impacted yourself” – WRONG
“I can’t believe what he said to yourself” – WRONG
“James and myself went to the pub” – WRONG

“It was really bad for me” – CORRECT
“I thought I would ask how it impacted you” – CORRECT
“I can’t believe what he said to you” – CORRECT
“James and I went to the pub” – CORRECT

Also:
“I asked myself what I should do” – CORRECT

That is all

  1. Mud says:

I so agree, I hate it when call centre bods use ‘yourself ‘ in that way:
“How was the experience for yourself?”

    Aaaarrrrgh!

In fact I had to restrain myself [correct!] from removing an inappropriate apostrophe from a sign outside a pub recently advertising “Friday nite DJ’s”

And don’t even get me started on ‘Nite’ or ‘Lite’!

    • nuttycow says:

No Mud. If you get me started on apostrophes, we’ll be here all day. Ditto on “your” and “you’re”.

I can feel the blood boiling already.

  2. marshaklein says:

Uncanny! I was having a rant of my own on this very topic only yesterday.

Heard someone on the radio (Radio4) say something along the lines of:

‘…this is being left to WE the public…’!

    Bah!

    • nuttycow says:

“we the public”? Who says that?

I think, funnily enough, the reason I started ranting about “yourself” and “myself” was because of an interview I heard on … Radio 4.

      Standards are slipping!

  3. Zstep says:

So how does this impact yourself? Myself, I can see your point.

  4. redneckrose says:

Where I come from “Good man yourself” is perfectly acceptable :D

  5. Fabulous. You’re a nuttycow after my own heart.

I, too, have urges to correct errant apostrophes, particularly when they’re used inconsistently within one sign. I saw a poster advertising “FLOWERS for BIRTHDAY’S and WEDDINGS” the other day.

The “myself”/”yourself” thing is one of those obnoxiously over-polite things, where things get so “polite” and “formal” that they actually go all the way back around into being offensive again. This kind of doublespeak is used a lot by managerial types. It makes me want to smack them in the teeth, the stupid spackers.

    Harsh but fair, I feel.

    • nuttycow says:

I think that’s it Pete – people think they’re being very formal and educated (see previous comments about hearing it on Radio 4) and yet actually, they’re showing their ignorance. ARG!

(smacking in teeth – perfectly acceptable)

  6. Smacking in the teeth for that kind of offence? Sounds excellent to me. Carry on.

  7. Edward says:

I do hate to point out the mote in your eye, but you wrote “there are hardly any instance …”

For myself, I agree wholeheartedly with the rest, natch.

  8. roseski says:

Bad grammar is such an annoyance to me! Maybe it’s a blogger thing… We write, therefore we like writing, therefore we know how to write… therefore bad writing/grammar is BAD!

A man who cannot txt without basic grammar/punctuation is not worth replying to. FACT.

    • nuttycow says:

A man who cannot write without basic grammar/punctuation automatically goes into the bin.

I judge on how you write – fact.

      Is that harsh!?

  9. Kaci says:

People really have issues with this one? Wow. Yeah I think if I heard these things, I’d feel the need to rant, too…

  10. Blonde says:

It makes me so happy there are so many pedants out there.

  11. Tim Footman says:

    “That it all”?

  12. Paula says:

I think sometimes people get this wrong on purpose. Which is really even MORE annoying…

  13. respectableside says:

see i have to admit that my spelling and grammar are so awful that i am probably one of those people (see i typed these and those loads of times before going with those and still thinking i am wrong). It doesn’t matter how many lessons my boss gives me i just can’t get it right!

  14. UrbanVox says:

and what brought THAT one up???
    LOL
BTW… u coming for the re-launch of the Metanoia Cafe?!?!?! :)

  15. BlackLOG says:

More Grammar & spelling Nazi’s – I feel it is better for people to express themselves, rather than getting worried that other people will pick up on a slight infringement of the English Language. Which can be pretty subjective at times. I admit that my spelling and grammar are awful, it stopped me expressing myself at school but no more. I now embrace it as part of me (or should that be part of myself) .

Writing is not an elite club and blogging has opened writing up to a mass audience. The way some people go on about making everything perfect amuses me. It’s like not letting people take part in sports because they are not the best at it (ok I feel the English cricket team should be banned for life but that’s on the grounds of cruelty to the English public and showing us up in front of the whinging Aussies).

As for the comment from Roseski “Bad grammar is such an annoyance to me! Maybe it’s a blogger thing… We write, therefore we like writing, therefore we know how to write… therefore bad writing/grammar is BAD!A man who cannot txt without basic grammar/punctuation is not worth replying to. FACT.”
I think someone might be heading into Stalinist territory – Will Roseski advocate rounding up anyone he/she feels does not meet his/her standards and cut their hand off to ensure they do not offend his/her sensitive eyes again, with all there bad writing and grammar. In which case should Roseski not cut off his/her own hands for using ‘txt’?, after all it’s bound to upset someone out there. As for “We write, therefore we like writing, therefore we know how to write” that had me in stitches. You are more than welcome to come to see the BlackLOG, you are more then welcome to criticise it for not meeting your high standards, just don’t expect me to worry about it. I Blog because I want to, it does not make me a good writer, I amuse a number of friends and the odd stranger (sometimes not just for bad spelling), that is more then enough for me…….

I feel sorry that a lot of talented creative people are held back from writing because of elitist attitudes.

  16. Catherinette says:

You know which one I really hate?

“If you have questions, please feel free to contact so-and-so or myself.”

Wrong!! So wrong!! Drives me crazy.

Don’t get me started on the your/you’re or there/their/they’re.
