Tomorrow is Chicago’s first annual ‘Talk Like Shakespeare Day,’ in honor of William Shakespeare’s 445th birthday. Should be interesting.
Whenever someone mentions Shakespeare, I always remember back to my time at the University of Manchester (2000-2001), when I accidentally signed up for the normal WS section instead of the one for international students. Let me just tell you how embarrassing it was to have to read out loud with my American accent AND a cold. Seriously. I almost cried.
In light of that, I am going to provide my top 10 list of things I miss from across the pond…aside from my friends and British accents.
In no particular order:
1. Wine Gums (I’m pretty sure I ate them every day)
2. Prawn cocktail crisps
3. Beans and cheese on toast (just doesn’t taste the same in America)
4. East Enders, Hollyoaks, and Neighbours
5. Caffreys
6. The Curry Mile
7. Cheap theatre tickets
8. London
9. Top Shop (now there is one in NYC, I hope the next is in Chicago!)
10. The countryside

Many, many years ago I saw a West End production of West Side Story. The actors tried to feign New York Italian and Puerto Rican accents. The music was fine but the dialogue sounded other-worldly.
when we lived in Germany far too many moons ago, I used to miss all sorts of things and would come back at Christmas time to stock up on things like British biscuits, baked beans, peanut butter, cereals. It is funny how however much we adapt to living abroad, we still miss our home comforts!!
Haha yeah, I saw Grease, and half way through, they lost their American accents. Oh well! Don’t forget to check NuttyCow out over at my blog!
Oh man, you just made me miss the hell outta England… What I miss?
The REAL pubs- not these fake “Irish Pubs” we have spring up over here and then they try to give them that rustic feel… it just ain’t the same!
